Theros League - Week 5

After a brief hiatus due to illness, our first event with Born of the Gods was a BNG BNG THS draft.  Felhide Spiritbinder and his minotaur clan skyrocketed to a 4-0 finish.

 

Monsters have a full 10 Devotion to Green!  Things should get even more exciting from here on in!

Born of the Gods is legal this week and it's Block Constructed!

Hey, I've been sick for the last week, so here's a late update.

Congratulations to Brian for going 3-0!

Whip of Erebos defeats Mono Red.  Also, every Tuesday for the last three weeks has been really cold.  Please come out anyways.  :(

Theros League - Week 2

After a couple of weeks, Mono Red displays its power with a 5-1 match record.  I played the deck for Heroes and went 3-0.  So yeah, Mono Red.  Hope you guys like what I unlocked.  Also, both teams received Magma Jet for free.

Now both teams can play Mono Red!  It's full of minotaurs.  If you haven't built a deck yet, you're welcome to do so and join us in the next event!

Again, we'll play some Commander afterwards.

Theros League - Week 1

Thanks for coming out to the first League event of the new year guys!

The Heroes Team won the first event - Congrats to Brian for going 3-0!

The two teams each started with 1 Devotion to Red or Green and wanted to expand into other colours.  There are 5 cards that don't require any Devotion to unlock.  (Anax/Daxos/Reaper/Polis/Fleecemane)  Both teams used these to add Devotion to colours they didn't have access to.

If you didn't make it to the first event, build a deck for one of the teams and come join us!

We're also playing Commander afterwards.

Theros League - Week 0

Theros League!  There are two teams this year:  Heroes and Monsters.
I will also be posting League Updates on the Hairy Tarantula site soon.

For those of you new to League, we play a modified version of Block Constructed once every week until the end of the Spring (usually June~ish).  This year, we're playing with Theros!  Theros Block Constructed means that only cards from Theros are allowed.  Additionally, there are "Locked" cards.  These cards cannot be played until they are "Unlocked."  Players compete in events to help their team eventually gain access to them.  This helps balance the format as well as our wallets.

At the end of League every year, the winning team shares a Booster Box of the latest set as their prize.  Each regular event also has an optional entry fee - if you opt in and win, you'll receive prizes.  Our events are also Sanctioned!  It's okay if you don't know what that means.  You'll get a DCI number and you can track your MTG progress online.  Despite being sanctioned, League is casual.  We emphasize having fun.  Our regular players will teach you the rules of magic and show you how to improve your game.  Events are NOT Competitve REL and offensive or overly-competitive behaviour will not be tolerated.  If you're cool with that, you're totally welcome to join us!


Mechanics

This year's mechanic is a throwback to our Mirrodin League of 2010!  Two teams and unlocks but with a twist - Devotion.  To unlock a card, you require a certain amount of Devotion to their colour(s).  Once cards are unlocked, they provide Devotion equal to the coloured symbols in their mana cost and can be played by any member of the team.  Also, Planeswalkers and Gods are UNIQUE - this means that the first team to unlock them will be the only team with access to them.

In our previous League games in the Fall, two players opened Purphoros and Nylea.  They opted to be on different teams.  Heroes have the favour of Purphoros and receive a free +1 Devotion to Red, while Monsters have the favour of Nylea and receive a free +1 Devotion to Green.

There are two ways to increase your team's Devotion.  First, unlocked cards will provide Devotion based on their mana cost.  Otherwise, if you receive prize packs and open a Mythic Rare, your team receives +1 Devotion to one of the colours of your Mythic.

Regular Block Constructed events are 3 Rounds of Swiss.  If there are more than 16 players, we may play an additional round.

The highest ranked player in each event on either team wins a free unlock.  The winner of the event also wins a free unlock.  This means 3 unlocks will be given out in each event.  Players receiving unlocks get to decide what cards to use them on.

Each team will receive a free unlock to start us off.

Return to Ravnica League Update

Short update.

This week's event (Tuesday, May 7th) will be held at Hairy Tarantula North.  The format is Pre-Release Sealed Deck, with guild packs from the Pre-Release.  Entry is $30, with prizes in store credit.  Anyone is welcome to participate in this event.  Players outside of League will be assigned a guild based on the guild pack they receive.  We'll add their exp/inf rewards to the respective team.

Starts at 6:00pm.

Return to Ravnica League - Event 21.5

Event 21.5 includes all the events we had during April (before today).  Thanks to everyone for coming out for EDH!  If you guys bring EDH in the future, we can play after events too!  On Tuesday, April 30, we'll be playing a team event!

A team event (it's like the World Magic Cup) means that each Guild picks 3 players and assigns them to Seat 1, 2 or 3.  Seating remains locked for the entire event.  Guilds will be paired up against each other during a match.  This means that Seat 1 will face Seat 1, Seat 2 will face Seat 2 and Seat 3 will face Seat 3.  After a player has finished their match, they can help their fellow teammates.  Guilds will need to win 2 out of 3 seats to win the Match.  

Awards for winning:

Seat 1 Match Win:  1 Free unlock

Seat 2 Match Win:  +100 Inf to all guild members

Seat 3 Match Win:  +100 Exp to all guild members

Guild Match Win:  1 Free Unlock

Winning Guild:  1 Free Unlock

These bonuses are in addition to your normal rewards for winning.  Free unlocks can be used to unlock ANY card for free.  They must be used immediately, but do not apply until the next event.  We'll be receiving Free Unlocks from now until the end of League.

Bleh.  I'm sick.  When I get better and when Werewolf isn't scheduled on a Tuesday, we'll have some special events.  I know that exams and finals are coming up, so I'll try to work around that.  I have plans for accelerated growth in anticipation of Dragon's Maze.  Another Team event 3v3v3v3v3, maybe another draft.  Does anyone have a EDH/Commander Deck with appropriate Guild Colours? =D
